NCAA Div I Wrestlers
Freedom has had three wrestlers go on to wrestle at the division one level in college wrestling. Bill and Garrett Lowney were the first to do so. Bill, a two-time state champ, received a scholarship to wrestle at Northern Illinois where he was a four-time letter winner and qualified for the NCAA national tournament in 2002.
Bill’s cousin Garrett received a scholarship to the University of Minnesota. After red-shirting his freshman season, Garrett then took another red shirt year to train for the Olympics. In 2000, Garrett won the Big Ten conference championship and went into the national tournament with an undefeated record and a number one ranking at 285. Weighing around 220, Garrett amazed many college wrestling fans because of the way he pushed around guys much bigger than him. Garrett lost in the semi-finals that year to John Lockhart of Illinois who would go on to win the championship. Garrett then wrestled back to place third and helped the Golden Gophers win a National Championship. Garrett placed 5th in at the national championships the following year. It was after that when he sustained a major neck injury and was unable to return to form in college wrestling. Garrett’s departure from college wrestling opened the door for another Freedom wrestler.
Cole Konrad took over for Garrett in 2003. Like Garrett, Cole found success right away and placed fifth in the nation as a freshman. In 2005, Cole won the Big Ten Championships at heavyweight and a few weeks later took second in the national championships. The following year, Cole would win the Big Ten championships for the second straight year. Cole again made the national championship, this time he got revenge against his rival, Steve Mocco, who he had lost to at the previous year’s national championship. Cole would go on to repeat as the NCAA heavyweight champion in 2007. Cole is the only NCAA division one national champion from Freedom.
